Last week OpenAI acknowledged “an unprecedented cyber incident” when an internal AI agent thought to have safeguards autonomously hacked into Hugging Face, a collaborative open source AI project. Days after Hugging Face posted about the hack, researchers at OpenAI ran an internal audit and discovered it was their model.

• 🎙️ This is why Transparency is one of our principle lenses for technology. Clem Delangue, Hugging Face CEO, stated in OpenAI’s post, “AI safety won’t be solved by any single company working in secret. It will be solved in the open, collaboratively, with broad access to AI for every defender, everywhere.”

On the heels of the Hugging Face hack, NVIDIA announced the Open Secure AI Alliance “to build and share open tools that promote responsible use of and trust in AI.” Members include tech companies like Microsoft, Adobe, and SpaceX.

• 🎙️ Without Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic on board, it’s hard to say what will come out of this open source initiative “to mobilize the full community of defenders.” Is it a public relations move, pressure on closed systems like OpenAI, a genuine move toward open source collaboration, or all of the above? Regardless, NVIDIA, the company with the largest market capitalization in the world, seeks to remain at the center of future AI development.

Last month the American Psychological Association (APA) released a guide “to navigating AI-generated advice thoughtfully and safely” and emphasized “AI is not a safe or effective replacement for care.”

• 🎙️ The APA guidelines are a great reminder that our use of AI (and any technology) should always point back to Humanity, our foundational principle lens. As people look to AI for advice and even relationships, we must remember AI is a machine with predictive output that mimics human emotion and reasoning.
