Tech Companies Count on Our Short Term Memory
Plus: IG's Sextortion Prevention & a Free Guide for Subscribers
Election season… is it over yet? Don’t worry… I’m not going there. But there’s a common ploy tech companies have mimicked from politics: Spinning the latest and greatest while banking on our collective short term memory. Much of social media is about the here and now, with little regard for the past OR consideration of the future.
When we catch wind of tech-related news, we’re committed to first rewinding before returning. It’s important that we look back because they count on us forgetting.
So whether it’s a Will Ferrell ad campaign trying to drown out a privacy policy change or a dividend to help investors forget about yesterday’s apology, they’re constantly reshuffling the deck to make sure we can only see the card they want us to see.
The deck is stacked against us, but there’s hope! That’s what “Driver’s Training for Social Media” is all about… putting us back in the driver’s seat. We just released the first segment of Module 2… now available to all “Behind the Curtains” subscribers.
This week Meta announced upcoming safety features for teens on Instagram to help prevent sextortion scams. Notably blocking messages from users they don’t follow, automatically blurring suspected nudes, and disabling screenshots and screen recordings on “‘view once” or “allow replay” images or videos. These are all steps in the right direction. Remember, people can still capture images with a separate device, so sending/exchanging nudes is never a good idea.
In the past few days, we’ve had a number of conversations with parents about screen time and safety apps. That’s why we’ve decided to make our Five Step Screen Time and Safety Guide available to all new subscribers… free or paid.
Spread the word! It’s completely FREE to anyone who signs up and offers a great glimpse into the course.
THANK YOU to everyone who has subscribed… we’re humbled and grateful!! Since you already subscribed, you can find the download link to the guide in the Actions Steps of Module 1: Disembodied Communication.
